I’m a native American English speaker and in 2003-2004 spent a year of high school in Gunma, Japan. At age sixteen I held a JLPT Level 2, but I doubt I could pull that off now.
I haven’t spoken with my Japanese host family in a very long time. I wish I had the guts to find and get back in contact with them because I would love to know how they’re doing.
